EASA-FAA International Aviation Safety Conference

The 2023 EASA-FAA International Aviation Safety Conference was held in Cologne from June 13-15, with delegates from around the globe. EMPIC used the event to engage with current and prospective clients, discussing future system developments to meet member states’ needs.
This annual EASA-FAA conference showcased the collaborative efforts of both agencies, emphasizing their ongoing partnership based on mutual trust.
 
Three key topics related to rulemaking were highlighted:
1. EASA can now expedite rulemaking by leveraging ICAO’s impact studies on new or revised SARPs, potentially reducing rule development time from 2-3 years to 6-8 months.
2. The integration of SMS into EASA’s airworthiness regulation has led to a close industry collaboration to develop and adopt the new SM-0001 standard. This standard is recognized by EASA as an Alternate Means of Compliance for DOA and POA holders, with more authorities expected to follow.
3. A technical session revealed a successful collaboration between EASA and FAA on regulatory developments for Electric and Hybrid Propulsion Systems (EHPS). Regular communication between the agencies aims to align the spirit of the regulation, leading to a single Means of Compliance (MoC), while maintaining national regulation for the time being.
